Independence Day

It was an unintentional silent protest in our home this weekend. We intended to go to a baseball game, but we waited too long to buy tickets.

We did go to a movie and ran some errands we needed to do for the weekend. We were home long before dark. As the fireworks started going off, we were home to comfort the dog and cat. 

It felt right. I am so disillusioned by the state of the government and society, so being at home and in our cocoon was a good thing to do. 

I was reading through the Declaration of Independence today, and a passage struck me:

That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

It goes on to talk about the hows and whens and whys of the independence of the colonies.

So much of the current administration is harming so many vulnerable communities, including my disabled community. At every opportunity, we need to stand up, speak out, and claim our power as the people.

The other thing that keeps coming to my mind is: “This too shall pass.” We are going to survive this administration. We are going to overcome and come back stronger. That is our birthright.
